My interpretation of this is that 'canned' means a success message sent immediately upon connection, i.e., without an identity request/response exchange. I think the document is clear on this.
Of course, this would imply that whatever statements the document has on the optionality of the identity exchange, they don't apply to the case of sending a success before running an authentication method. That is, you can't omit BOTH the authentication method AND the identity exchange.
How do others feel about this?
